Reading Frank Ocean talk about his fashion inspo and recording his beautiful “Moon River” cover was enlightening. I’ve been awestruck with Frank Ocean since I hearing the chords of “Super Rich Kids” in high school. He’s an amazing human being, so it shouldn’t be so shocking that he knows how to moisturize. But when I read that Ocean is obsessed with night cream, my jaw hit the floor. And when he clocked men for going to sleep with their day face on, I lost my goddamn mind!!
“I really do believe in a night cream. I feel like men just go to sleep. They may wash their face or they don't even bother—they go to sleep with the day face on. You really need to do a gentle wash and put a night moisturizer on. You can't have the retinol in your creams in the day because it makes you more sun-sensitive, so you wanna throw that on at night. I need the night cream because when I wake up I feel very beautiful, moisturized and ready to have people making eye contact with me, ready to look above my eyebrow, below the eyebrow.”
Ocean and I both desire to feel beautiful, and our vehicle of choice is a cute night cream. I realized after this article that my night time routine is literally just creams. Burt’s Bees deep cleansing cream and tretinoin to cream and clean my skin in the evening. I seriously have no idea how boys out here go to sleep with their “day face on.” It actually nauseates me to think about it because I’ve never liked being dirty. Instead I opt for a heavy, rosy moisturizer for winter. What makes ME feel beautiful when I wake up is Glossier PMR. I basically bathe my skin in it before passing out all winter long. I haven’t found a retinol I’m obsessed with, but share if there’s one you like in the comments below.
Pharrell told Ocean to exfoliate for his flawless skin. “It's been all these years, and Pharrell still hasn't given us the keys yet. He just says ‘exfoliate,’ but it's not just ‘exfoliate’: We need more keys.” He definitely does more than exfoliation, but that’s a hot tip for people starting with no routine at all. We have Ocean to thank for these boys having a skincare routine now.
You should read Ocean’s interview because, like his albums, he only does one so often. He’s always well spoken and thoughtful in getting the most powerful and important message across. Kind of similar to our newsletters that come out every Tuesday.
