Building a skincare routine is no easy task. There are so many products to choose from, so many opinions, so many recommendations, so little time… So, how can you find a routine that is a perfect match for your specific skin type? We lay out a plan (and create a solution) to find the routine that will help you reach your ultimate skin goals:
Deep Dive Into Your Skin
Building a skincare routine starts with understanding the anatomy of the skin. The outer layer of the skin, also known as the skin barrier, retains moisture and balances the skin, but over-exfoliation can strip away important cells. This disrupts the skin’s natural barrier, which can lead to sensitivity, breakouts, and even sun damage.
Fun fact about your skin barrier: it is full of bacteria, yeast, and viruses (don’t worry, this is a good thing!) that outweigh human bacteria 10 to 1. This ecology of bacteria is called the microbiome and is responsible for keeping the skin healthy and balanced.
The inner layer of the skin, known as the dermis, is responsible for oil production and hydration. The dermis contains sebaceous glands which produce sebum (oil), and while sebum gets a bad rap for causing acne in its excess, the skin needs sebum to stay hydrated and fresh-looking.
Fun fact about sebum: if you tend to have oil that rests on top of the skin, that’s your skin signaling that you’re stripping your skin of its natural oils! Sebum will be overproduced to make up for the dry skin.
Find Your Skin Type
Now that we’ve explored the inner workings of the skin, let’s identify your unique skin type. We think labels suck but they help us provide a framework for understanding skin needs. Skin can typically fit into one of three categories: dry, oily or combination, but skin type is definitely more fluid than that and can change based on your microbiome. Let’s dig in!
You may have dry skin if:
Your skin feels tight
You have flakiness
Your skin is irritated
You have a layer of oil that sits on top of your skin*
*Again, if your skin is dry, your glands will produce excess oil!
You may have oily skin if:
You have a layer of oil
You have acne near overactive glands
You may have combination skin if:
Your skin experiences a mix of the above
Oily and dry regions neighboring one another on your face
Building That Routine
Once you’ve identified your skin type, it’s time to build your very own routine! There are some aspects of a routine that are universal across skin types and these are cleansing, moisturizing, and sunprotection. Once you have these down, you can add in elements to target concerns and nourish your skin, like a toner or exfoliator and a serum.
But how can you really know if the products in your new routine are working for your skin type? Well, that’s what we’re excited to tell you! We’re proud to introduce Rate Your Routine, a platform that takes the guessing and money-wasting out of skincare and focuses on ingredients that will help you achieve your skin goals.
